EL CALAMAREO

To the northeast of Corralejo, at approximately one mile off the coast in the direction of Lanzarote, the reef of Calamareo is situated. It can only be reached by boat, in approximately 5 minutes.

The reef extends in an east-west direction, and is a wall falling vertically down to 22 meters maximum, forming vaults, large and small caves, canyons and passageways, with many large rocks.

There is a wide variety of fauna. African and Caribbean as well as Mediterranean. Glass Eyes, Trumpet Fish, Groupers, Canarian Lobsters and Parrotfish. Many different types of Bream, Barred Hogfish, Angel Sharks, and different types of rays. We position the boat close to the edge of the drop-off. The rope serves as a reference point for our descent, as well as doing the safety stop.

The currents are not usually very strong here. But if there is a current it is best to use the edge of the wall as protection.

The recommended tour for beginners, is to swim in either an easterly or westerly direction keeping the edge of wall on one side, and returning the same way. For the more experienced diver, the route is similer, but in the deeper area at around 20 meters, and returning in the upper area at about 10 meters. Again you can swin either to the left or the right. Depending on whether you wish to explore the area of the canyon, or the area of sand and occasional cave.

EL CALAMAREO II

An area very close to the previous one with similar characteristics as Calamareo.

Punta Lala

Further to the north than Calamareo II, a mile from the coast of Fuerteventura, some 10 mins by boat. This dive is a slope of basaltic furnace which falls down to 17 meters, forming furrows and cavities, reaching to the deep area of sand.

The upper part is covered by different species of algae, the most common species of fish being, Barracuda. All types of Bream can also be found, and in the sand depending on the time of year there are Angel Sharks and Rays.

Some 2 miles from Punta Lala and approx 25 mins towards the west is a cliff that falls from 9 meters down to 15 meters, with a sandy bottom with contains some very interesting, rocks, cracks and passageways.

Many different species of algae can be found on the upper part of the rocks, as well as a wide variety of fish, such as Barracuda, Bream, Guelly Jacks, Barred Hogfish, Rays, Groupers, Cow Bream, and Glass Eyes. Diving at this site is fine for all levels of experience, as the deepest part is between 9 and 15 meters. This is also an area of few currents.

EL BAJON DEL RIO

A reef in the channel between the Isle of Lobos and Fuerteventura, some 16 meters deep at itīs maximum. The dive is situated approxmately in the middle of the channel, it is reached by boat and takes about 5 mins from the port of Corralejo. The bottom is a mixture of basaltic formed volcanic rocks, shaped like huge mushrooms, with loose rocks around the bottom, and in between. This dive is one of spectacular scenery, with the appearance of a coral reef. The upper part of the mushrooms is covered with brown and green algae, and colonies of different sponges. Under the rock formations there ser shoals of fish, that shine in the sunlight which penetrates the water easily as this dive is a fairly shallow one. Some of the species which can be seen are Black Bream, Zebra Bream,Ornate Wrasse, Parrot Fish, Guelly Jacks, Trumpet Fish, Cow Breams, Saddled Breams, Morays, Barracuda, Blue Fin Damselfish, Canarian Lobsters, Groupers, Amberjacks, Eagle Rays, Sting Rays, Trigger Fish, Scribbled Filefish, Glass Eyes, Angel Sharks and large Scorpion Fish. This is an area of much life. There are, however at times, strong currents within this channel, but it is still suitable for divers of all levels of experience. This dive cannot be dived every day as the timing of tides and currents is very specific

LA CARRERA

To the southeast of the Isle of Lobos, is the formation of Carrera. It is again only reachable by boat. Approx 20 mins ride out.

In this area the bottom is flat white sand, and the reef that surrounds it is shaped like a volcanic crater. This rock is formed from basaltic volcanic furnace, which contains many cracks and crevices. In the sandy centre the maximum depth is approx 16 metres. In the surrounding rocky area it is between 10 and 12 metres. In the sand you can find Stingrays, and Eagle Rays, as well as Angel Sharks, and in the surrounding rocky areas and small caves are Canarian Lobster, Groupers Zebra Bream , Parrot Fish, Amber Jacks, Barracuda, Saddled Bream, Bermuda Sea Chup, Cow Bream, Guelly Jacks and Morays.

Diving is fine for all levels of experience, and, as it is usually protected from the North wind, it represents a good alternative if weather conditions prevent diving in other more exposed areas. It is a peaceful dive and its waters are usually exceptionally clear.

The recommended route is to follow the contour of the crater all the way around, until you return to the starting point, take time to explore the cracks and crevices.

LAS ANCLAS

To the north of Corralejo towards Lanzarote, at approximately 2 miles off shore, and 15 mins by boat ,is located the wall of Las Anclas. Thus named bcause of a large number of old Anchors which can be found at this site. The edge of the wall falls from a reef of 17 metres down to 26 metres.

Because of conditions here the dive site is suitable for more advanced divers, as there is usually some current, which can be attributed to weather conditions. It is impossible to dive in the open sea at this site. Instead the recommended route is towards one the of the sides, having the edge of the wall to one shoulder and making the return in the opposite direction when your contents gauge indicates 100 bar. You will then find yourself close to the anchor of the boat.

MARRAJO

Close to the west coast is the Isle of Lobos. And close to the Island is the dive site of Marrajo. Reachable by boat in only 10 mis. This reef is shaped like a figure of 8. With a maximum depth of 14 metres.

Here can be found many Groupers, Octopus, Morays, Anger Sharks and Stingrays. As well as Eagle Rays, Guelly Jacks, Bvream, Mullet, Blacktail Combers, and the occasional Canarian Lobster.

This area is ok for all levels of experience, but sometimes there can be strong currents. The recommended route to follow is around the profile if the figure 8 and back again to the point at which you started.

LAS GORGONIAS

One mile from Las Anclas, and 18 mins by boat a low reef which follows a similar route. The reef is approx 2 – 3 metres high, and lies in a depth of approx 28 metres

The most outstanding feature of this dive is the large amount of yellow sea fans which can be found all over this reef. In places there are so many that they almost form a forest. They resemble small trees approx 1 metre high. Similar species of fish can be found here as can be found at Las Anclas

This dive site could be considered as an advanced site due to itīs depth and the occasional strong current found there.

BENTOS II

Some 5 miles from the coast in the direction of Lanzarote. And 20 mins by boat. This is the deepest point in this area. The reef starts at 20 metres and falls away to some 35 metres.      This area is recomended for experienced divers only, due to itīs depth.

EL BECERRO MANSO

Very close to another dive called Bajo Del Charco De Las Agujas, it is actually approx 300 metres futher into the channel. And reachable by boat in only 5 mins. This dive is a small reef about 3.5 meters in height. We can use this site if the weather is very bad.

At this dive you can see many types of small fish, as well as Rays, Angel Sharks, small Guelly Jacks and Scorpion Fish.

Highly recommended as a dive for both novices and experienced divers.

LA GRUTA

Located approx 500 meters from Becerro Manso, and 5 mins by boat this is a very large reef shaped like a horse shoe in between can be found 2 large arches. The bizarre rock formations of this dive make it a very interesting site. It is an area of many canyons strewn with enormous stones and with a sandy bottom. The maximum depth is only 12 metres but due to itīs complex nature, it is essential to go with a guide who knows this area.

The entire area is covered with various types of algae, and with very few Sea Urchins. Here can be found Guelly Jacks, Barracuda, Sea Bream of all types, Stingrays Groupers, Trigger Fish, the occasional Scribbled File Fish, Morays Octopus, and Eagle Rays.

GRUTA II

In the same place as Gruta I. But if it is explored from a southerly direction, this dive becomes a dive with a much different perspective.

LA VIEJA

This again is a dive with a great area to be explored. It is also of interest due to its basaltic formation, and is one of the most protected reefs in the area. It is a calm dive with hardly any currents. In it are many passageways and canyons. The maximum depth is 10 meters.

The edge of the reef has shoals of fish, with a great many Parrot Fish, the reef itself is covered with many varietys of algae. BAJO DE NEREA

Some 200 meters to the south of Vieja, and reachable by boat in 10 mins. this area is also a very large surface to be explored in one dive. The basaltic rock formations make it a most interesting dive. Again with few currents it had many passageways and canyons, and itīs maximum depth is only 10 metres. The flora and fauna found there is very similar to the previous 2 dives.

EL QUESO

This is a very interesting reef. It actually resembles a giant Gruyere cheese! With many holes and a labyrinth of passage ways, thus it is very important to follow a good guide who knows the area, as the bottom contours can change rapidly. When the waters here are exeptionally clear, it can be good for underwater photography, and videography. All varieties of algae, many Stingrays, Angel Sharks, Cow Bream, Glass Eyes, Canarian Lobster, Bream and Guelly Jacks. Going inside the arcs and tunnels is usually not recommended for divers with little experience, it is essential to have good boyancy control, and to be accompanied by a guide who knows the area very well, as there are parts of the reef that are unsafe to enter due to rock falls. Beginners can remain outside the reef.

BAJO DEL TIO BARTOLO

To the east of Fuerteventura opposite the great beaches, and approx 1 mile off shore, and a 25 min boat ride out, a very long reef can be found. This reef is not very high only approx 3 metres at its highest, with an arc shaped like a V in one of itīs areas. Maximum depth 25 meters, with gravel like rocks at one end.
